| hal zurtahâ yawman ? |

| And did you see the green trees |
| wa ra’ayta ash-shajara al-akhdara |

|
| and the stretched out beach ? |
| wa ash-shâti’ al-mumtadda |
|
|
|
|
| Have you had dealings with its residents? |
| hal ‘âmalta ahlaha? |
|
|
|
|
| They have good manners |
| fihim husnu khuluqin |
|
|
|
|
| There is cheerfulness of disposition in them |
| wa fîhin tîbu ma‘sharin |
|
|
|
|
| The traveller gets comfort in it |
| fîha yastarîhu al-musâfiru |
|
|
|
|
| And the resident feels secure in it |
| wa fîha ya’manu al-muqîmu |
|
|
|
|
| And all cooperate with each other in it |
| wa fiha yata‘âwanu al-jamî ‘u |

|
|
|
| In Dubai there is a book fair |
| fî dubayya ma‘ridun li-al-kutubi |
|
|
|
|
| In it are valuable books |
| fîhi kutubun qayyimatun |
|
|
|
|
| on science and literature |
| fi-al-‘ilmi wa-al-adabi |
|
|
|
|
| I visited the fair one day |
| zurtu al-ma‘rida yawman |
|
|
|
|
| and I met a friend of mine |
| fa-wajadtu sadîqan li |
|
|
|
|
| and we shook hands and talked to each other |
| fa-tasâfahna wa tahaddathna |
|
|
|
|
| He asked me: Where do you work? |
| sa’alani: ayna ta‘malu? |
|
|
|
|
| and since when do you work? |
| wa mundhu matâ ta‘malu? |
|
|
|
|
| I, therefore, replied and said: |
| fa-’ajabtu qâ’ilan |
|
|
|
|
| I work in the university |
| a‘malu fi al-jâmi‘ati |
|
|
|
|
| and for years, |
| wa mundhu sanawâtin |
|
|
|
|
| and praise be to Allah |
| wa al-hamdu lillâhi |
